Meet the Candidate: Cheryl Smith

Two candidates will be on the ballot in the November 3, 2026, election for Grand Junction Mayor; Cheryl Smith and Isiah Hunt. We invite you to read their interviews and learn more about these candidates before you cast your vote.
Meet Cheryl Smith
Why have you chosen to run for Mayor of Grand Junction?
Smith: I care about our town and want to do what I can to help in moving forward. So after a lot of prayer and encouragement from several residents of Grand Junction I felt that it was time to step up.
Would you like to share anything about your family and work history?
Smith: Although I was not born in Grand Junction, I feel like I was meant to be here. After we moved over 35 years I felt like I had come home.
One of the things that small towns face is how to do the things we want and need to do for the citizens with a very limited budget. My professional background is in accounting and bookkeeping, which I feel would be beneficial.
What experience do you have that has prepared you for this position?
Smith: I am currently serving as Vice Mayor/Alderman and have previously served in this same position. I have also spent the last 2 years taking as many online courses as possible that have been offered by MTAS. I am also one course from completing my CMFO certification with MTAS and should be finished with that by the end of October.
What do you anticipate being the most difficult part of this position?
Smith: It is hard to pin-point what will be the most difficult. You have the budget issues, not enough funds to pay for the services you want to provide. Then there is just bringing the town together to all work towards the same goals. I am sure that each day will bring its own challenges and I am going to do my very best to meet them head on.
In a single sentence (about 25 words), how would you respond to the question, “Why should I vote for you?”
Smith: I care about the future of Grand Junction, I will not make a lot of promises about what I am going to do, the only thing that I can promise is that I will do my best for the entire town.
Early voting dates are Wednesday, October 14, 2026, through Thursday, October 29, 2026. Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2026.
