A Safe Haven Room Opens in Grand Junction

Residents of Grand Junction should feel a little bit safer during tornadoes now that it has a newly constructed safe haven room for the citizens of the town. The safe haven room, located at 530 Madison Avenue West in Grand Junction, was revealed to the citizens on Saturday, October 22, 2022, with a ribbon cutting attended by Mayor Todd Pulse.

“The idea for a safe haven came about five years ago when a tornado came through our area,” said Grand Junction Mayor Curtis Lane. “The Purpose of the safe haven is to provide a safe place during a tornado watch or warning weather.”

The project was funded through the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency grant dollars. With a population of approximately 340 residents, the safe haven room, which has a maximum capacity of 416 people, will be able to provide refuge for all of the citizens of Grand Junction.

“In the event the National Weather Services advises of a tornado watch or warning is in effect, the safe haven will be open,” said Mayor Lane. “I am proud of being able to provide a safe haven during such an event for the people of our community.”
