A Walk in Pink Brings Awareness to Breast and Other Cancers
Cancer survivors and supporters of those with cancer gathered at the Courthouse Square in Bolivar for the Breast Cancer Health & Awareness Walk, which was held on Saturday, October 12, 2024. The event was for all ages of people and began with a prayer that was followed by the walk in support of survivors and those currently living with cancer.
There were almost 50 people in attendance for the walk, which was last held in 2020.
“This was an annual event until COIVD hit in 2020. It was the first time in four years that we held it,” said walk organizer Nikki Williams. ”We wanted to make people aware of all cancers and to provide ways to prevent it and assist with medical insurance knowledge to those who are battling cancer.”
Although not a breast cancer survivor, Wendell Sain, is a survivor of prostate cancer and currently in remission. He attended the walk to support others like himself who have been directly affected by cancer. Mr. Sain also wants to encourage men to take time to care for themselves.
“I know the process to check for prostate cancer can be difficult for most men, but it is a necessary sacrifice for your health. Our wives and mothers go through it for their exams. Get checked early, especially if someone in your family has had that type of cancer before the age of 40,” said Mr. Sain.
Ms. Williams noted the importance of fellowship during those times. She also believes mental and spiritual support for people with cancer as well as for the family members that may have to care for them, is very important.
“The highlight of the walk was seeing everyone being up early and excited to walk for the purpose of the today, which was supporting survivors and praying for those that are battling,” said Ms. Williams.
