Beta Sigma Chapter DKG Recognizes 2026 High School Essay Contest Winners

Beta Sigma (TN) Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International (DKG) recently recognized the winners of this year’s high school essay contest:
- Third place, Meredith Whitfield, who plans to attend Blue Mountain to study elementary education.
- Second place, Maggie Morris, who plans to attend Ole Miss to study nursing.
- First place, Eric Malena, who plans to attend MTSU to study aviation mechanics.
The essay contest is part of the chapter’s literacy initiative. This year’s prompt, in recognition of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, asked students to write an essay of 450-600 words on the following: Choose one founding ideal from the Declaration of Independence. Discuss how this ideal has been interpreted or changed in the last 250 years and reflect on the impact this may have on your life as an American citizen.
Eric Malena’s essay also placed first at the state level. In addition to his state-level cash prize, he and his parents have been invited to attend the organization’s awards luncheon in late May at the University of the South at Sewanee where Eric will read his winning essay.
