Bolivar Awarded $700k to Renovate ICE Building

Mayor Julian A. McTizic and the City of Bolivar recently announced that Bolivar had been selected for a Site Development Grant through the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development (TNECD).

The City of Bolivar was awarded $700,000 for building rehabilitation at the Hardeman County Industrial Park, which is located near the corner of Highway 18 and Van Buren Road. According to the City, the funds will be used for electrical upgrades and lighting at the ICE Building, which the city recently purchased.

The Bolivar City Council unanimously approved the City purchasing the building at its February 12, 2024, meeting. Mayor McTizic said then that the building was scheduled to go up for tax sale due to delinquent taxes, but he had reached out to the owners and offered to purchase the building first. At that meeting, it was said the purchase would cost the City $100,000 ($62,169 for the building, plus paying the back taxes of $37,831). The City hopes to use the facility to recruit new industry to Bolivar.

“We want to thank the site development team of the TNECD for their invaluable assistance, continued support, and investment into rural Tennessee. We also want to acknowledge and thank our state legislators for supporting the funding of the site development grant program. The receipt of this grant moves the City of Bolivar one more step forward in landing a new industry at that facility,” said Bolivar Mayor Julian A. McTizic.

In total, the State awarded 15 new Site Development Grants, totaling more than $17 million.

“What happens in rural Tennessee matters to all Tennesseans, and we’ve made significant investments to strengthen the skilled workforce in our rural counties,” said Tennessee Governor Bill Lee. “TNECD’s Site Development grant program further supports those efforts by creating high-quality jobs for thousands of Tennesseans across our state and spurring future economic growth.”

The Site Development Grant program is part of the Rural Economic Opportunity Act, which provides funding to improve the economies of Tennessee’s rural communities.
