Bolivar Votes to Give Old Health Department Building to County for Highway Offices

The Bolivar City Council met for its regular monthly meeting on Monday, October 16, 2023. The Council voted unanimously to give the old Health Department building to the County, which will be used by the Highway Department for office and storage space. In the event the County no longer uses the building, it will again revert back to the City of Bolivar.

Highway Department Superintendent Casey Swift was present at the meeting and says he intends to fix up the building and use it for office space, while allowing the County and the City of Bolivar to use some space for storage.

Some of the other items that were covered during the meeting include:

Mayor’s Report: The Mayor’s Report included an announcement of a Reception and Check Presentation from the Tennessee Housing Development Agency for a Grant on that will be on Thursday, October 19, 2023, an announcement of Bolivar BBQ Blowout being held on Friday and Saturday, October 27 – 28, 2023, and that City Offices will be closed on Friday, November 10, 2023, in Observance of Veteran’s Day.

Public Comments: Hardeman County Mayor Todd Pulse invited everyone to join in the County’s Bicentennial Celebration on Saturday, October 28, 2023, beginning at 11 a.m. at the Hardeman County Courthouse. Committee Reports: Reports came from electric, utilities, fire, police, parks and recreation, streets and sanitation, library, compliance/zoning,and tourism/community development.

Fire Chief Lynn Price presented the fire report, which included 22 fire calls, 16 were in the city and six were in the county.

Police Chief Mike Jones presented the police report, which included 715 calls, 228 citations, 19 incident reports, and 28 arrests (17 adults, 11 juveniles).

The tourism/community development report gave an update on the Small Town, Big Christmas event which will include nightly concerts. WBBJ in Jackson was hired to produce a commercial for the event. The BBQ Festival (Friday and Saturday, October 27 and 28, 2023) will have a carnival this year and wristbands for rides will be $25.

Old Business: Discussion on Library Employees Salaries: The library employees may finally get their raises that were approved in 2021 by the City of Bolivar. The City claimed it could not pay the raises until the County approved since the City and County share ownership over the library. The County approved the raises at its September commission meeting.

Discussion on Old Health Department Building: The Council voted unanimously to give the old Health Department building to the County to be used as the Highway Department office and storage space.

New Business: The Council passed Resolution 2023-016: Authorization to Submit Application to Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development Site Development Grant Program. The grant will be used to provide an access road in the Bolivar Industrial Park.

Councilman Tommy Woods was absent from the meeting.
