Bolivar’s Raquel Kirk Attends Tennessee Governor’s School for Agricultural Sciences

MARTIN, Tenn. – Bolivar Central High School’s Raquel Kirk was one of 30 students that participated in the University of Tennessee at Martin’s annual Tennessee Governor’s School for the Agricultural Sciences (TGSAS) from June 1-27, 2025. The participating students, all upcoming high school seniors from across the state of Tennessee, lived in the residence halls on campus during TGSAS.

Dr. Philip Smartt (shown in navy shirt on the top row), professor of natural resources management in the Department of Agriculture, Geosciences and Natural Resources, is in his first year as the director of the TGSAS program, succeeding Dr. Joey Mehlhorn, the Gil Parker Chair of Excellence in Agriculture, Geosciences and Natural Resources, who guided the program since 2011. Mehlhorn taught AGEC 110, Introduction to Agriculture Business, and NRM 101, Introduction to Natural Resource Management, providing attending students with three hours of college credit. Raquel took NRM 101 while attending the program.
