The Fertile, The Flirt, The Felon, . . . And The Funny at the Arts Council

Pictured is the cast of Christmas Belles (l to r): On the front row are Matt King (Dub Dubberly), Rebecca Turner (Rayna Chisum), and Wesley Estes (John Curtis Buntner). On the back row are Braden Foster (Justin Waverly), Megan King (Gina Jo (G.J. Dubberly), Gloria Matejka (Patsy Price), Mary Dillon (Honey Raye Futrelle), Kathy Weaver-Ross (Frankie Futrelle Dubberly), Joyce Byers (Rhonda Lynn Lampley), Leanne Young-Willis (Twink Futrelle), and Jennifer Smeltser (Miss Geneva Musgrave).

The stage is set and the cast is getting reading for Christmas Belles, which is the Christmas production presented by the Hardeman County Arts Council (HCAC), Friday through Sunday, December 1 – 3, 2023. And, as usual, when the HCAC brings comedy to the stage, you can expect big laughs, and its production of Christmas Belles definitely does not disappoint. Who knew one family could generate so much chaos and confusion on the stage where the audience can only do one thing, laugh?

Christmas Belles takes the audience to Fayro, Texas just in time for the annual and long-running Christmas program to be presented. We meet the Futrelle sisters, Frankie, Twink, and Honey Raye, who each is a comedy in their own story. The production is directed by Julie Bell and Marnina Smeltser.

SYNOPSIS: It’s Christmas-time in the small town of Fayro, Texas, and the Futrelle Sisters – Frankie, Twink and Honey Raye – are not exactly in a festive mood. A cranky Frankie is weeks overdue with her second set of twins. Twink, recently jilted and bitter about it, is in jail for inadvertently burning down half the town. And hot-flash-suffering Honey Raye is desperately trying to keep the Tabernacle of the Lamb’s Christmas Program from spiraling into chaos. But things are not looking too promising: Miss Geneva, the ousted director of the previous twenty-seven productions, is ruthless in her attempts to take over the show. The celebrity guest Santa Claus – played by Frankie’s long-suffering husband, Dub – is passing a kidney stone. One of the shepherds refuses to watch over his flock by night without pulling his little red wagon behind him. And the entire cast is dropping like flies due to food poisoning from the Band Boosters’ Pancake Supper. And when Frankie lets slip a family secret that has been carefully guarded for decades, all hope for a successful Christmas program seems lost, even with an Elvis impersonator at the manger. But in true Futrelle fashion, the feuding sisters find a way to pull together in order to present a Christmas program the citizens of Fayro will never forget. Their hilarious holiday journey through a misadventure-filled Christmas Eve is guaranteed to bring joy to your world!

The audience will see some familiar faces in the cast, and also a few new ones who are making their debut on the HCAC stage. Through the course of rehearsals, the collective cast has managed to confirm this is a production people do not want to miss.

Tickets are now on sale online for Christmas Belles. The box office opens Monday, November 27, 2023, at 11 a.m.
