Hardeman County General Sessions Judge Boyette Denton officially announced his upcoming retirement at the Tuesday, January 23, 2024, meeting of the Hardeman County Commission.

In a letter sent to the County, Judge Denton said, “Regretfully, this letter is to inform you that I have plans to retire, effective March 31, 2024. This has not been an easy decision nor was it one that I intended on having to make. When I ran for re-election, I never anticipated having to end my career before the completion of my elected term. As you know, I have Parkinson’s disease and it has progressed to the point where I have very limited mobility, in getting from one area to the next without falling and injuring myself.”

Judge Denton expressed his appreciation to the citizens for their support of his family.

“The people of Hardeman County have been very good to me and my family and have supported them in excess of 60 years in either the practice of law or in my position as Judge of the General Sessions Court and I appreciate each and every one of them. My grandfather, H. Boyette Denton, was the Hardeman County Clerk and the Clerk and Master for Chancery Court. My father, H. Morris Denton was the attorney for both the government and the private sector throughout his career. He was known as “Lawyer Denton” and I was fortunate to practice with him for 20 years.”

He concluded by reflecting on his appreciation to the people for allowing him to serve as the judge for Hardeman County.

“I certainly have many people to thank for this opportunity that I have fulfilled as serving as the Judge for Hardeman County. I would like to acknowledge my appreciation to Hardeman County for their love, support and prayers.”

The County Commission voted to accept his letter of resignation, effective March 31, 2024. The Commission is expected to appoint a judge, at the February County Commission meeting, to serve until the August election, when the voters will elect a candidate to fill the remainder of Judge Denton’s term.
