Landfill Expected to Reopen After More than Three Years of Repairs

It has been a long three+ years as the County and municipalities have dealt with the closure of the Hardeman County Landfill. The landfill was temporarily closed in the fall of 2019 due to repairs that were required to be made.

After many years of work and follow-up inspections, it has been announced the landfill will reopen and begin accepting waste again on Wednesday, February 22, 2023.

“I appreciate the hard work from Director Steven Graves and the entire landfill crew, A2H engineering, Darren Grantham, and chairman Jeff Kennamore and the Solid Waste Committee,” said Hardeman County Mayor Todd Pulse. “This has been a long time coming and we are very grateful to all that made this possible.”

Since its closure, all waste has been hauled to a neighboring landfill in Walnut, Mississippi. It is estimated this has cost the County well over $1,000,000. Municipalities that pick up trash in their city limits have also experienced increased cost.

At the February City of Bolivar council meeting, during discussion over audit and budgeting, Mayor McTizic commented, “the travel to and from Walnut has killed our sanitation fund . . .”

When questioned about the $618,000 compactor that was purchased earlier this year, Director Steven Graves said, “As we begin to accept garbage again, the new compactor will be worked into the landfilling process as we build toward the closing of Cell 3 and opening of Cell 4.”

Graves continued, “Estimates say that we have approximately eight months to two years left in Cell 3 and the life of Cell 4 is projected to be 10-12 years.”

No comment was provided as to why it took this long to make the required repairs.

The Hardeman County Landfill is a Class I disposal facility, which is able to accept non-hazardous municipal solid wastes such as household wastes, approved special wastes, and commercial wastes. The landfill is inspected monthly by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.

The landfill is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Find the full list of convenience centers and hours here.
