Obituary: Barbara Barnes Cox

Barbara Barnes Cox ~ July 1, 1938 – March 16, 2024 (age 85)

Mrs. Barbara Barnes Cox, 85, of Middleton, passed from this life on Saturday night, March 16, 2024, at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.

She was born in Hardeman County, the daughter of the late Daniel Wells Barnes, Sr. and Elsie Elizabeth Howell Barnes and was a 1956 graduate of Bolivar Central High School. A member of the Reaves Methodist Church, she was the widow of Glen Cox. Mr. Cox died May 2, 2005. She lived over 20 years in Memphis where she worked for and retired from J.M. Smucker Company.

She is survived by a son, Alvin Dale Cox (Joetta Jankowski) of Middleton; a daughter, Aloma Faye Nowell (Greg) of Eads, Tennessee; a sister, Shirley Jean Kirk of Austin, Texas; a brother, Gerald Wayne Barnes of Middleton; five grandchildren, Joseph Nowell (Natalie), Stephen Nowell (Lydia), Matthew Nowell (Cynthia), Cody Cox, and Brittany Moran (Lee Moore); and 13 great-grandchildren and one “on the way”.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Gloria Annette Jolly and Sandra Mae Barnes; and two brothers, Daniel Wells Barnes, Jr. and William Gordon Barnes.

Services will be held at the Shackelford Funeral Home in Middleton on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at 11 a.m. with burial in the Reaves Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the charity of the donor’s choice.
