Obituary: Dr. Richard E. Berryman

Dr. Richard E. Berryman, a distinguished dentist and beloved member of the Bolivar community, passed away on January 5, 2025, at the age of 79 in Bolivar, Tennessee. Born on May 1, 1945, in Hardeman County, Tennessee, Richard dedicated over 56 years of his life to the field of dentistry, beginning his career in 1968 under the esteemed mentorship of Dr. Harold Fitts, before opening his own practice in 1971.

He was a proud graduate of Bolivar Central High School, where he excelled as the valedictorian of the class of 1963. Pursuing further education, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from UT Martin and went on to receive his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry, laying a strong foundation for his lifelong commitment to oral health.

Dr. Berryman was not only a dedicated professional, but also a passionate individual with a variety of hobbies and interests. He cherished the time spent outdoors, particularly enjoying hunting and fishing; duck and deer hunting were among his most favored pastimes. His love for nature extended to the Hatchie River, a place that held many fond memories for him. In addition to his outdoor pursuits, he was a devoted academic, contributing to the field of dentistry through teaching and engagement at the University of Tennessee in Memphis.

A long-time member of the Gideon’s, Richard’s dedication to his community and faith was evident in his service. He was a longtime member of Bolivar First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher and served on several committees.  He balanced his career with family life, and he is survived by his loving wife, Sandra Grantham Berryman of Bolivar, whom he married on December 15, 1967, and their two sons, Chris Berryman and Bryan Berryman, both of Bolivar. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Earl Berryman and Hazel Keller Berryman. His father’s family was native to North Mississippi and Essary Springs and his mother’s family came from the Toone area.

Services will be held at Bolivar First Baptist Church on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at 1 p.m. The burial will be in the Union Cemetery in Bolivar.

Dr. Berryman’s legacy will be felt for generations through the countless lives he touched both in his professional capacity and within his community. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.  Memorial contributions in his name may be sent to the Gideon’s International or the Bolivar First Baptist Church “Lottie Moon”.
