Obituary: Emily Vincent Hinson

Emily Vincent Hinson passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 4, 2026 at Hock Family Pavilion in Durham, North Carolina. She was born April 22, 1943 in Bolivar, Tennessee to the late John Iver Vincent Sr. and Lois Long Vincent. She was the ninth of eleven children, and the first daughter.

She graduated from Bolivar Central High School in 1961 and attended West Tennessee Business College in Jackson, Tennessee. While living in DeRidder, Louisiana, she worked as an administrative assistant for the district judge and state representative.

Emily was a dedicated member of the East Union Baptist Church for many years. She was also an avid piano and organ player.

She married John Butler Hinson on August 16, 1963, remaining devoted to each other for 53 years until his death on April 30, 2017.

She is preceded in death by her parents, John Iver Sr. and Lois Elizabeth Long, stepmother Cornelia Stewart Harris, and brothers Wilbert Bernard, John Iver Jr., Calvin O’Neal “Buddy”, Joseph Hiram, Cecil Wayne, Jewell Kenneth, Raymond Curtis, and Richard Alvin.

She is survived by her children, Angela Kay Heilman of Durham, North Carolina, and Gen. John Bradley (Elizabeth) Hinson of Fort Knox, Kentucky, grandchildren Taylor Katherine Heilman of Wake Forest, North Carolina, and John Hunter Heilman of Durham, North Carolina, and siblings Ullis Edward “Butch” Vincent of Collierville, Tennessee, and Frieda Vincent Waller of Bolivar, Tennessee.

Funeral Services were held Saturday, April 11, 2026 at Shackelford Funeral Directors Chapel, Bolivar, TN.

Emily Hinson’s memory will live on forever through the lives she touched and the ones she loved. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.”
