Lieutenant Colonel James Marshal “Jim” Anderson, Sr. ~ July 1, 1937 – August 17, 2023 (age 86)
GATLINBURG, TN – Lieutenant Colonel James Marshal “Jim” Anderson, Sr., age 86, of Gatlinburg, passed away on Thursday, August 17, 2023, at NHC Place, Cool Springs in Franklin, Tennessee.
Graveside services will be held at the Ames Plantation Cemetery in Grand Junction, Tennessee on Sunday, August 20, 2023, at 2 p.m.
He was a 1955 graduate of Batesville (Mississippi) High School and received his AA from Freed-Hardeman College in Henderson, Tennessee. He graduated from Mississippi State University with a BS in Animal Sciences and went on to attain his PhD in Agricultural Economics from the University of Tennessee.
The son of the late Lewis Monroe Anderson and Mozelle Catherine Massey Anderson and a native of Oxford, Mississippi, he lived in Maryville, Tennessee, Stoneville, Mississippi from 1968-1970, Leland, Mississippi from 1970-1976, Grand Junction 1976-2003 and retired to Gatlinburg where he lived until late
2022.
While living in Grand Junction, Dr. Anderson was Superintendent of the Ames Plantation for 27 years. Previously, he was a researcher at the Stoneville Experiment Station in Mississippi and worked as an agricultural economist at MSU in Starkville.
An active member of the Church of Christ in Grand Junction and in Pigeon Forge, he served both congregations faithfully as a Bible class teacher and Elder. Among his favorite pastimes were reading and studying the Bible with Job and Revelation being two of his favorites.
For 34 years, he served in the US Army Reserves achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and teaching at the Officers’ Command School.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Dezmere Marie “Autumn Moon” Anderson for whom he was primary caretaker nearly 30 years. She departed this life on Thursday, October 24, 2019. He also was preceded by five half sisters and brothers, Bertha, Bertie, Lillian, Lewis, and Tommy.
Jim is survived by sons, James (Cindy) Anderson of Franklin, Tennessee, Robert (Sherrie) Anderson of Killen, Alabama, Edwin Anderson of Gainesville, Virginia, and Tim Anderson of Iowa Falls, IA; grandchildren, Tucker (Sara), Connor (Jessica), McKenzie, Seth, Lainee, Hannah, Jesse, Gracie, and Peyton; and great-grandchildren, August and Philip.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Hobart Ames Foundation Cemetery Fund, 4275 Buford Ellington Road, Grand Junction, Tennessee, 38039. (The Ames Plantation is a 501(c)(3) organization)
