Obituary: Ruth Ann Mitchell – Bolivar, Tennessee

Mrs. Mitchell departed from this life late Monday evening, October 3, 2022, at Bolivar General Hospital. She is the widow of Mike Mitchell who passed away on September 23, 2013.

Services were at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Friday, October 7, 2022, at 1 p.m. Internment followed at the Mitchell Family Cemetery in Bolivar, Tennessee. Shackelford Funeral Directors of Bolivar provided professional arrangements.

Ruth Ann was born in Madison County, Tennessee, the daughter of the late John K. Hughes and Anna Ruth Hagemann Hughes. Prior to moving to Hardeman County 57 years ago, she lived in the Montezuma community of Chester County. Ruth Ann married Mr. Charles Michael “Mike” Mitchell on October 16, 1963. They were married 49 years at the time of his death on September 23, 2013. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Ronald, Gerald and John K. Hughes, Jr.

Mrs. Mitchell was primarily a homemaker who enjoyed cooking for family and friends. She worked for a short time at the ACS office in Henderson. Mrs. Mitchell also worked at the Developmental Center and, for 10 years, at Ross Equipment Company, both in Bolivar. Mrs. Mitchell was a communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a member of the VFW Ladies’ Auxiliary. In her leisure time, she enjoyed reading, sewing, caring for her flowers, gardening, and travel.

Mrs. Mitchell leaves two sons, John Mitchell and Charles Michael Mitchell, Jr., both of Bolivar; one sister, Carol Curry of Waianae, Hawaii; two brothers, John K. Hughes, III, of Hartsville, Tennessee, and Bobby Gene Quint Hughes of North Carolina; and a granddaughter, Megan Mitchell of Hawthorne, California. Memorials may be sent to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the American Cancer Society, or the American Heart Association.
