Sandra Wooddell Harris Continues to Achieve Artistic Excellence for Hatchie Chapter DAR

The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) American Heritage Committee and the Hatchie Chapter of the Tennessee DAR are proud to announce that member Sandra Harris of Toone has again won the National First Place Award in Art & Sculpture in the category Acrylic for her entry entitled, “Not My Cup of Tea“. This is her second time placing first for an original painting and third year to place in this category.
Additionally, Ms. Harris has again won the Evelyn Cole Peters Award for excellence. This is a prestigious award which may be presented for excellence in any of the contest categories when an exceptional entry is presented. There are over fifty separate American Heritage categories of artistic stylings to include entries in art, sculpture, handcrafts, jewelry making, literature, drama and music. Her painting stood out among all artistic entries.
Creating her beautiful painting was only one part of the competition. All entries were to incorporate the 2026 theme for the American Heritage Committee which was “The Road to Independence – Acts of Rebellion and Treason.” She was obliged to compose a description of her piece; her words exactly encapsulate the inspiration each DAR member carries in her heart. An excerpt follows:
“The waxed crescent moon symbolizes renewal and the start of the new moon. It is often used to describe change and growing stronger. Our strong patriots made changes and gave us a new start, a historic revolutionary form of government. The colonists gathered in God’s House to confirm a solid foundation in the planning of our independence. The faint image of the flag embodies the birthing of our freedoms. As free and independent DAR members, we have inherited our ancestors’ spirit of patriotism. The DAR women of today would proudly stand on that pier, pour out all the tea they could find, and in an act of defiance proclaim to the world… ‘Not MY Cup of Tea!’”
Ms. Harris has proven for many years to be an exceptional artist and Hatchie Chapter is proud to have her as a member. Both awards will be presented to Ms. Harris at the JW Marriott in Washington D.C on June 26, 2026. Congratulations Sandra!
