Walley Asks Governor for Temporary Dyed Diesel Exemption for Farmers, Loggers
State Senator Page Walley is asking Gov. Bill Lee to consider temporary relief for Tennessee farmers, loggers and other agricultural and forestry haulers as diesel prices place additional pressure on operating costs.
“Everyone is hurting when it comes to gas and diesel prices,” Walley said. “I have asked the Governor for particular assistance on behalf of our farmers and foresters.”
Walley, who represents Tennessee Senate District 26, sent a letter to Lee requesting support for an exemption that would allow qualifying farmers, loggers and other agricultural haulers to use dyed diesel fuel in vehicles used as part of farming and logging operations through at least Nov. 15, 2026.
In his request, Walley said agricultural and forestry producers are facing substantially higher fuel and other operating expenses. He noted that Tennessee already provides tax exemptions for certain qualifying agricultural and forestry purchases and for fuel used under appropriate circumstances.
Walley is asking the governor to support a temporary exemption that would permit qualifying farmers, loggers and agricultural and forestry haulers to use dyed diesel in vehicles traveling on Tennessee roads and highways as part of their operations.
He also asked Lee to work with the Tennessee Department of Revenue and General Assembly to determine the appropriate legal mechanism needed to implement the proposed one-time exemption.
Walley also called for state officials to consider longer-term options in the future.
“Agriculture and forestry are such important parts of our state’s economy, particularly in rural Tennessee,” Walley wrote in the letter.
Walley said he looks forward to working with the Lee administration and members of the General Assembly on possible long-term solutions.
