Small Town Barber Danny Cheshier Celebrates 66 Years at his Shop

When you have been in the barber business for sixty-six years and done more than “400,000 haircuts”, people just want to celebrate you and that is what they did for Danny Cheshier with a surprise celebration that was held on Monday, May 20, 2024, at Danny’s Barber Shop in Bolivar. The community came out to not only celebrate a legacy business, but the man who has stood behind the barber chair cutting and styling customers ever since he gave his first hair cut on March 3, 1958, soon after finishing barber school.

Although Mr. Cheshier has reduced his hours in the shop, he has no plans to retire any time soon. He still serves several faithful customers who have been sitting in his chair for years. On Monday, the roles reversed. Mr. Cheshier sat in his own barber chair as well-wishers brought him gifts, gave him hugs and shook his hand, and took pictures with the Hardeman County celebrity.

“He gave me my first haircut when I was two years old,” said Hardeman County Mayor Todd Pulse who did not miss the opportunity to celebrate Mr. Cheshier.

“He has been cutting my hair since I moved here,” another guest shared giving the impression he had moved to Hardeman County many years ago.

Dana Cheshier, Mr. Cheshier’s daughter, planned the occasion and was joined by her son, Evan Williams, his wife, Danielle, and their daughter, Mr. Cheshier’s younger brother Jack, his niece, Alecia Lawrence, as well as other extended family members as guests poured into the shop. Other community leaders that stopped by included State Senator Page Walley, and Hardeman County Assessor of Property Josh Pulse. The City of Bolivar Mayor Julian McTizic was also in attendance and presented Mr. Cheshier with a challenge coin and a certificate of appreciation, which he read, that thanked Mr. Cheshier for being a pillar in the community for 66 years as a barber and proclaimed Monday, May 20, 2024, as “Danny Cheshier Day”.

Mr. Cheshier teared up occasionally, but otherwise took the day in stride. He made sure to address everyone, mentioned how nice everyone was, and that he was thankful for all who came through the door.

Danny’s Barber Shop, located at 100 Warren Street, in Bolivar is still open for business, and you can expect to see Mr. Danny Cheshier standing behind the barber chair waiting for you to take a seat.
