Middleton’s J.P. Shelly & Sons Celebrates Over 100 Years of Serving Community {video}

The Middleton community showed up and showed out on Thursday, February 8, 2024, as J.P. Shelly & Sons was celebrated by the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development (TNECD) as a part of its intent to pay tribute to companies that have been in operation for 100 years or more in the Volunteer State.

While few companies withstand the test of time and serve their communities for the long haul, it is even more rare that a company continues within the same family, like J.P. Shelly has done. Keith and Lori Shelly represent the fourth generation of the Shelly family, which has operated the business for more than 120 years. J.P. Shelly & Sons was originally founded by William Henry Shelly in 1902. The family business continued when William’s son, J.P. Shelly, joined the company in 1929. Harry Shelly joined the business in 1949 and his brother John P. “Red” Shelly followed in 1956. Keith and Lori Shelly are now continuing the family tradition of serving the community.

When asked why he thinks businesses like J.P. Shelly & Sons have been able to remain in business for more than 100 years, TNECD Commissioner Stuart McWhorter shared the following, “It’s probably a combination of a lot of things . . . commitment to a business . . . commitment to a community . . . a little bit of luck along the way. You know preserving legacy, I think that is one of the things I have seen in these three, or four, or five presentations I’ve done, is just a commitment to a legacy and you don’t really talk about the business as much. You talk about the people and how the people have got you to where you’ve landed. I think it is really a tribute to folks that have committed to a business, the leadership. I’m sure there have been some tough times along the way. How they got through it? I don’t know, but they did and I just think it is a grateful way for us to celebrate that with them.”

James “J.P.” Shelly joined the company in 1929 and built a new store in Rogers Springs, Tennessee, which is depicted in a display at J.P. Shelley’s Middleton store.

J.P. Shelly & Sons stocks all the necessary materials for building, repairing, maintaining, and renovating homes, such as lumber, windows, doors, plumbing, electrical, tools, and appliances. They also carry boots, clothing, fertilizer, feed or seed, and hunting supplies. The slogan of the shop is, “If we don’t have it, we can get it!”
