School Board Votes to Add Lower Grade Levels to Alternative School

The Hardeman County School Board (HCSB) unanimously passed a policy update at its December meeting in favor of adding grades second through sixth to the alternative education school. Previously, only grades seventh through twelfth utilized the alternative school program.

An alternative school is a short-term intervention program designed to provide educational services outside the regular school program for students who have been suspended or expelled.

The new policy reads in part:

“The HCSB shall operate an alternative school and/or program for students in grades seven through twelve (7-12) who have been suspended or expelled from the regular school program. Students in grades second through sixth (2-6) may be assigned to the alternative school at the discretion of the Director of Schools/designee. Attendance will be mandatory in each instance.”

The full Alternative School Policy may be found here.

The first reading of the new policy may be viewed at the 11:45 minute mark is this video.
