UT Extension Tomato Contest Celebrates Homegrown Success at Bolivar Farmers Market

The annual Hardeman County Tomato Contest, which was held on July 7, 2026, brought gardeners, home cooks, and tomato enthusiasts together for a day of friendly competition at the Bolivar Farmers Market.
Hosted by UT-TSU Extension Hardeman County, the contest featured categories highlighting both homegrown tomatoes and tomato-inspired dishes. Participants competed in categories including Largest Tomato, Weirdest Shape, 3 Best Red Tomatoes, 3 Best Green Tomatoes, 10 Best Cherry Tomatoes, Best Cold Tomato Dish, and Best Cooked Tomato Dish.
Contest rules required that all tomatoes entered in the tomato categories be grown by the participant, while tomatoes used in the dish categories were not required to be homegrown. Ribbon awards were presented in each category.
This year’s contest showcased the variety, quality, and creativity of local gardeners. Mike Gowdy earned top honors in the Largest Red Tomato category.
Brandy Sides had an exceptional showing, capturing first-place awards in four categories:
- Weirdest Tomato
- Red Tomato
- Green Tomato
- Cherry Tomatoes
Organizers thanked everyone who entered their homegrown tomatoes, visited the displays, and supported local gardening efforts.
