Youth Learn the Importance of Local Government During First Day of Camp Bolivar

Camp Bolivar was off to an active start on Tuesday with campers visiting various city government departments. Bolivar Mayor Julian McTizic led them on an adventure filled day with campers learning to hook up a fire hose, racing to save a baby, and putting out a pretend fire with the Bolivar Fire Department.

Afterwards, they headed to the Bolivar Police Department and got a lesson on how alcohol impairs ability. They tried completing various activities while wearing impaired goggles and each had an opportunity to ride the ‘Seatbelt Convincer’.

Campers also visited the water department, 911 communications, streets and sanitation department, and Bolivar City Hall.

Camp Bolivar is in its third year with a focus of teaching middle schoolers the functions and importance of local government, and local businesses. The annual four-day summer camp is open to students entering sixth, seventh, and eighth grades.
